ERDEM Moralioglu

Born Montreal, Canada, 1976.
Growing up in Canada, Erdem gained a romantic view of England through watching Merchant Ivory films with his English mother; his father is Turkish. He studied fashion in both Canada and England, and did an internship at Vivienne Westwood before gaining his master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 2003. He then worked for Diane von Furstenberg in New York for a year before returning to London and setting up his own label in 2005. That same year he won the
Fashion Fringe award, going on to win the Swarovski British Fashion Council Fashion Enterprise Award in 2007, and the BFC's Fashion Forward award in 2008. Erdem was also nominated for the prestigious Swiss Textile Award and The British Fashion Council's 2009 Collection of the Year Award. His clothes have gained much exposure through being worn by celebrities and public figures including Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron. In 2010 his business received a boost when he won the inaugural British Fashion Council/Vogue Fashion Fund Award of £200,000 plus mentoring to grow his business. His boldly coloured floral prints and beautifully cut floor-length silk dresses have brought him widespread recognition. Concerned with the beautiful and the feminine rather than the cutting-edge, Erdem creates clothes which are graceful and romantic: 'I never think about what's sexy," he says. 'I focus on the silhouettes and the proportions and hope that takes care of everything.' Yet his designs are also modern and distinctive, created using the latest modern digital printing processes. Known for his polite manner and his signature Cutler & Gross glasses, Erdem describes himself as an aesthete, concerned primarily with beauty. He has worked with shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood on his recent collections, and sought inspiration from the Ballet Russes costumes at the Victoria & Albert Museum for his elegant S/S2011 collection. Now sold around the world in more than 50 stores including Colette, Harvey Nichols, Browns and Saks Fifth Avenue, Erdem has been nominated for Designer of the Year in the 2010 Fashion Awards.
